“We need to learn about the past….. ….. we also need to learn from it.”
The Kigali Memorial Centre is a joint partnership between Aegis Trust and the Kigali City Council. It was opened in 1998 and is a great place to learn about the 1994 Genocide, 1959 Genocide and the history of Rwanda. In April 2004 it was inaugurated on the 10th Anniversary of the beginning of the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.
The Kigali Memorial Center is a one place that gives its visitors an extremely good understanding of Rwanda’s history. It makes you appreciate peace. And with this, it’s best for every Leader (especially African Leaders) to pay a visit to this place; because… “An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind!” and… “Peace is always beautiful.”
This memorial site was put up into three establishments / exhibitions that the Children’s memorial (Tomorrow Lost) – Education Center, the Memorial Gardens as well as National Documentation Center of the genocide. There are the three permanent exhibitions are on display, the largest of which documents the 1994 Rwanda Genocide.
It shows how the events of 1994 came about, how the world reacted and the actual events of the genocide. It is an insight into a shocking part of Rwandan history which has shaped them into the cohesive and progressive society that they are today.
There is a children’s memorial and an exhibition on the history of the genocidal violence around the world. The centre is built on a site where 259,000 people are burried.
All visitors to Kigali should see the Genocide Museum in Kigali. It is part of Rwanda’s past, and provides a moving memorial to those who lost their lives. This is a dark tourism site that has attracted many tourists and scholars and continues to attract many.
