Gorilla Trekking
A Kigali safari is a great way to get to know Kigali. One of the most famous activities a visitor can take part in is gorilla trekking at the Parc National des Volcans. This national park re-opened in July 1999 after the civil war and is now the most sought after place in East Africa for observing mountain gorillas. A military unit stands guard over the park for security reasons to make the area safe for visitors.
Mountain Hiking
Visitors can scale the highest volcano, Karisimbi, or even Bisoke or Sabinyo. There are various trips ranging from four-hour return trips to two-day summit blitzes. Rwandan authorities do not currently allow treks up the slopes due to rebel factions lying low on the mountains, not to mention the odd land mine or two.
